The days of our age are threescore years and ten; and though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years, yet is their strength then but labour and sorrow; so soon passeth it away, and we are gone.

And if we can suck up these eloquent words, they’ll nourish us, we’ll live better and enjoy life more.

As you said sombrely but truly a while ago, Charles, it’s not so much that we are living longer, we are taking longer to die. nb diff between being alive, and living. I expect we’ve all met very elderly people who are living, and pleased to be so, and not so elderly people who are merely alive, even if their health is better than the ancient joyful ones.

Singing carols in an old peoples’ home, our choir met an elderly lady who was full of joy, and could still sing mezzo, as she showed us in the hall on the way in! She belted out the carols better than some of the young ‘uns in the choir. What a tonic reminder to those of us not in the first flush….
